Roel Deden

Hello, my name is Roel.
As you can see i am a web-, product- and graphic designer. I was born in the year 1987 in a place called Haarlem, right next to Amsterdam in the north of the Netherlands. I started drawing from a very early age and developed my sketching skills rapidly. So, i am involved in graphic design practically my whole life. Around 1998 i got my first home computer and started using this digital medium to widen my knowledge. I quickly learned to get around with Photoshop, Flash and HTML to begin as a freelance web designer. After going to Eindhoven to study at the Design Academy (where i still am at the moment) i started to get active as a product designer as well. The Design Academy has given me the tools to create whatever i want.

One of my other passions is sports, surfing in particular. In surfing i still find most of my inspiration and relaxation. This hobby went out

of control and gave me a different look on the world. In combination with the Design Academy it made me realize that we have a lot of work to do to reach a sustainable future.

TWIN HEADPHONES

The twin headphones was created to encourage people to share their music. The big and robust and the small and elegant headphones make a whole wen fit together and can be taken apart to share your music and experience it together.

TOOLS ON THE MOVE

Tools on the move is a concept to stimulate the sharing of garden tools. Rent a cart in the centre of your city witch contains tools from a electric lawn mower to a wheel barrel. After a day of hard work you bring it back for the next person to use.

STAIR PLAY

This staircase is meant for the whole family to enjoy. In the translucent drawers you can put messages for a family member. The wooden drawers have a magnetic surface to stick on rail pieces for kids to build their full stair marble tracks.

This teapot was the outcome of an academy assignment. The shape is based on a rolled up seahorse were the eye becomes a handle to hold the teapot and the snout the exit for the tea.

OCEAN TEAPOT

This teapot was the outcome of an academy assignment. The shape is based on a rolled up seahorse were the eye becomes a handle to hold the teapot and the snout the exit for the tea.

BONE MOUSE

This is a concept for a mouse were all unnecessary material has been removed to give your sweaty palm some air witch makes long times of computing more comfortable.

OUD EN WIJS GENOEG

Loneliness under the elderly is a problem in the Netherlands. Connecting them through a digital noticeboard where they can offer to teach their skills to younger generations. Combining this with the lack of tutors in schools solves two problems at once.

STICHTING DENK VRIJ

Transgenderism is a hot topic nowadays but not really generally accepted jet. Creating a platform to inform people about this topic can help people to empathize with transgenders and to discuss their experiences and opinions.

Of course my journey comes with a mission. As i mentioned earlier i came to realize we need to take responsibility for our actions to reach this sustainable future. I try to think this way in everything i do and handle by the four R's of recycle, reuse, reduce and refuse. I try not to feed modern day consumerism and make products that create awareness about what and why we consume. I'm not a big fan of manipulative marketing where needs are created. My vision is to respond to existing needs in a sustainable way to reach a brighter future.

DEFINE

The first thing in the process is defining what we have to do, this could be the solution to a problem, the layout and style of a website or even an idea for a surfboard graphic. A lot of sketching and modeling is involved in this stage to get a good sense of all the possibilities. We also look at who the product is for and what it communicates. A concept is born!

REFINE

When the subject is chosen we can start refining the design and work out all the little details. This stage is very important because one small detail can make or break the design. At the end of this stage we are nearly there. We are close to the finished product and is almost ready for deployment.

DEPLOY

Now everything fits together. The idea has become a solution and with the enduser in focus, we have made something that empowers them with an enjoyable experience. We have thought about long term use and how it effects us and the environment for the better. Our product is now able to stand on its own and ready to be shown to the world!
